As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will support the Human Landing System (HLS) Descent Element engineering team, performing tasks across the full system development lifecycle. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of developing the next human lunar lander.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities may include, but not be limited to*

  • Elicit and define use cases, scenarios, concept of operations and stakeholder expectations

  • Identify, derive, develop, and maintain requirements, including traceability and verification approach, necessary to implement a design that meets objectives

  • Document the allocation of system requirements to lower-level specifications, showing the traceability of all requirements and verification approaches

  • Support the definition and maintenance of the system interface requirements and interface control documents.

  • Plan and support requirements verification and validation efforts

  • Monitor and report on technical performance metrics

  • Perform system trade studies

  • Support the risk and opportunity management process

  • Generate Component and Subsystems Specifications, and Trace to Descent Element Specification (L3 – Lower specs)

  • Generate the document hierarchy

  • Represent Descent Element at National Team Working Groups

  • Coordinate and lead the Design Reviews

Required Skills*

  • Understanding of the principles, concepts, and methods of system engineering complex systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment


Desired Skills*

  • Manage NASA Design & Construction Standards Compliance

  • Familiarity with system safety analyses techniques including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

  • Support the update to the Structures & Mechanisms Design Databooks 

  • Define the Structures & Mechanisms Engineering Release Process by defining standard drawing notes

  • Perform Finite Element Analysis tasks as directed including loads & dynamics and stress 

  • Experience in the full lifecycle development of aerospace systems, including requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning and operation

  • Experience working on large complex programs with multiple partners

Required Education/Experience*

  • B.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics or related technical discipline

  • 2+ years of relevant experience

  • Experience in part of a complex system lifecycle – one or more of requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning or operations

  • Experience with Human spaceflight

Desired Education/Experience*

  • 5+ years relevant experience

  • Structure and mechanics background
