Responsibilities and Job Duties:

  • Effectively conduct Safety functions in support of the ISS Flight schedule. 

  • Participate and coordinate with various boards, panels, and working groups in strategic and tactical planning activities to ensure that potential risks are assessed and mitigated in the development of increment planning.

  • Develop and deliver Safety & Mission Assurance assessments and reports in accordance with flight schedule and team plans. 

  • Participate on the Increment Management Team and actively participate to ensure safety requirements are developed and implemented to meet mission objectives. 

  • Conduct Safety assessments in support of ISS mission safety requirements.  

  • Present S&MA status at Mission Integration and Operations Boards/Panels and team meetings, Increment Management, Safety & Mission Assurance Control Boards and Launch Package meetings.

  • Perform technical evaluations of Change Requests (CRs), Hazard Nonconformance’s and Waivers to the Increment Definition and Requirements Document (IDRD) and Flight Planning to meet Program Schedule Milestones.

  • Perform transfer and disposal evaluation and input to Increment Stage Requirements.

  • Generate and deliver Hazard Reports, Verifications, Safety & Mission Assurance technical evaluations and hazard report assessments.

  • Assess, track, report and present safety and crew status data. Generate and present periodic reports and performance metrics.    

  • Develop and coordinate reports in support of S&MA panels, boards and working groups.

  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Required Education/Experience/Skills*

  • BS in Engineering or related science/technical field or comparable related experience (Engineering or Hard Science).

  • Entry level 0-5 years ISS related experience with strong aptitude or knowledge of Spacecraft, ISS assembly, element interdependencies and systems.

  • Knowledge of ISS real-time operations processes is highly desired.

  • Ability to efficiently assimilate large amount of information, fast learning and requires the use/understanding of engineering and mathematical principles.

  • Console experience is highly desired

  • Travel may be required on a periodic basis to support program reviews and technical interchange meetings (TIMs).

  • Demonstrated high-level proficiency in problem solving, written and oral communications with peers, management, and customers.

  • Effective team work and conflict resolution skills with employees and customers.

  • Self-initiative to identify problem/opportunity areas and implement improvement solutions on a task and project level.

  • Excellent organizational, change management and time management skills.

  • Proficiency with MS office products is mandatory with familiarity with information system interaction.

  • Must be willing to learn, able to multi-task and prioritize work to meet critical schedule requirements in a dynamic environment.


Essential Requirements 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Applicant selected may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods.

  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.

  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.

  • Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.

  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required. (4 am start or 8 pm finish)

  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.

  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
