Linux/UNIX System Administrator (HSFTIC)

Location: Houston, TX. Full-Time Exempt

Responsibilities:

 

The Linux/UNIX system Administrator will:

  • Provide system support to technology & business teams as needed during development, delivery, & design to guarantee robust, strong, scalable solutions

  • Manage installation and configuration, systems integrations, job scheduling, and resolve system security scans

  • Perform daily system monitoring: verifying the integrity and availability of all IT resources (servers, storage, networks and other Network connected devices, systems and key processes, reviewing system/application logs for errors, vulnerabilities, and improvements, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups

  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system and database administration tasks; identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale

  • Provide Tier I/II/III support per request; perform troubleshooting and diagnostic tracing

  • Recover from hardware/software failures; coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies

  • Maintain secure, compliant, current environments by applying patches/fix and COTS products upgrades on a regular basis; assess/recommend upgrades/feature packs and replacements as needed

  • Maintain and write, configuration, or other process and procedures

  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning

  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required

  • Adhere to/contribute to best practice standards, continuous improvement

  • Demonstrate leadership abilities and positive attitude

  • Balance concurrent assignments

  • Extensive interaction with various IT Departments

  • Interaction with business users, 3rd-party vendors, and software maintenance support contractors

  • Provide inputs into IT hardware/software planning and End Of Life (EOL) support and the procurement process

  • Attend and participate in various IT meetings, provide expert knowledge, and meeting notes where they may impact or apply to our IT infrastructure   

  • Author technical and engineering memos and presentations as required

  • Interpret customer requirements and decompose them into hardware and system requirements and specifications.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • BS/BA degree in a computer Science related field from an accredited university or equivalent specialized experience.

  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems, multiple virtualization platforms (VMware),

  • Knowledge of enterprise storage systems (NetApp desirable).

  • Experienced with multiple web platforms (Apache, IIS etc.), web accelerators and load balancers such as F5 BigIP.

  •  Thorough understand of networking and logical flow of data to assist developers, and network administrators for troubleshooting

 

Preferences:

 

  • Experience with product lifecycle management for HW/SW

  • Experience with building, configuring and troubleshooting Linux/Unix systems at an Enterprise level

  • Have worked with Networked attached storage systems (Network appliance a big plus, and SAN storage)​

Essential Requirements: 

 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Applicant selected may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods

  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.

  • Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.

  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.

  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.

  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
